Stalins kannibaler

There is no algorithm for evil, but the case of Stalin’s has for a long time weighed more heavily the ideological murders and gulag deaths that began in 1937 and played down the millions who—Snyder argues—were just as deliberately, cold-bloodedly murdered by enforced famine in 1932 and 1933.

Here is where the shock of Snyder’s relatively few pages on cannibalism brought the question of degrees of evil alive once again to me. According to Snyder’s carefully documented account, it was not uncommon during the Stalin-imposed famine in Soviet Ukraine for parents to cook and eat their children.

The bare statement alone is horrifying even to write.

The back story: While Lenin was content, for a time anyway, to allow the new Soviet Union to develop a “mixed economy” with state-run industry and peasant-owned private farms, Stalin decided to “collectivize” the grain-producing breadbasket that was the Ukraine. His agents seized all land from the peasants, expelling landowners and placing loyal ideologues with little agricultural experience in charge of the newly collectivized farms, which began to fail miserably. And to fulfill Five-Year Plan goals, he seized all the grain and food that was grown in 1932 and 1933 to feed the rest of Russia and raise foreign capital, and in doing so left the entire Ukrainian people with nothing to eat—except, sometimes, themselves.

I’ve read things as horrifying, but never more horrifying than the four pages in Snyder’s book devoted to cannibalism. In a way I’d like to warn you not to read it; it is, unfortunately, unforgettable. On the other hand, not to read it is a refusal to be fully aware of what kind of world we live in, what human nature is capable of. The Holocaust taught us much on these questions, but alas, there is more to learn. Maybe it’s better to live in denial. Better to think of human history Pollyanna-like, as an evolution upward, although sometimes I feel Darwin spoke more truly than he knew when he titled his book The Descent of Man. Certainly one’s understanding of both Stalinism and human nature will be woefully incomplete until one does read Snyder’s pages.

Here is an excerpt:

In the face of starvation, some families divided, parents turning against children, and children against one another. As the state police, the OGPU, found itself obliged to record, in Soviet Ukraine “Families kill their weakest members, usually children, and use the meat for eating.” Countless parents killed and ate their children and then died of starvation later anyway. One mother cooked her son for herself and her daughter. One 6-year-old girl, saved by other relatives last saw her father when he was sharpening a knife to slaughter her. Other combinations were, of course, possible. One family killed their daughter-in-law, and fed her head to the pigs, and roasted the rest of her body.”

According to Snyder “at least 2,505 people were sentenced for cannibalism in the years 1932 and 1933 in Ukraine, although the actual number of cases was most certainly greater.”

Mao’s Great Famine: The History of China’s Most Devastating Catastrophe, 1958-62.

Læserkommentarer:

“I find it odd that one of the worlds most horrific events remains largely unknown, until now. Dikotter has shed light on an event that can rival Pol Pot’s genocide or the Holocaust, and for this, I commend him. Rarely do you get to read about such a historic event for the first time – I found myself unable to put the book down. This is a book for everyone, not just academics or those interested in Chinese history, for everyone – I highly recommend it.”

“Dikötter does a great job of telling the history of the famine that, at what he says is a conservative estimate, took 45 million Chinese lives at a time when the national population stood at around 650 million – that’s about seven percent of all Chinese at the time. In the final chapter, Dikötter gives a convincing explanation of how he arrives at this number. ”

Mao surpassed Stalin, Hitler and all other mass murderers of the twentieth century. Jasper Becker in his path breaking work ‘Hungry Ghosts’ gave the first detailed insight into Mao’s mass extermination of his people.”

A mass grave has been unearthed by Russian motorway builders. Experts believe the estimated 500 victims – including children – were shot in the back of the head by dictator Josef Stalin’s secret police in the 1930s.

“This happens all over the country, it’s impossible to say how often,” Felige said. “All we can to is put up monuments to remember the dead.”

Twenty years after the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, the Polish government are about to completely erase memories of the Cold War past and make everything from the hammer and sickle and red flag to trendy Che Guevara t-shirts and posters illegal.

Ungarn: An amendment to the Criminal Code was passed by the parliament’s majority center-right party FIDESZ (Hungarian Civic Union) on Tuesday, Itar-Tass reports. According to the new legislation, those denying, casting doubts on, or depreciating the crimes committed by the Communist regime will be facing from one to three years behind bars.

Anden Verdenskrig i Baltikum

Nyere forskning i Sovjetunionens arkiver

Interview på Front Page Magazine med Olga Velikanova,

an assistant professor at the University of North Texas, where she teaches Soviet history.

Dr. Velikanova was among the first scholars to work with declassified Communist Party and secret police archives. Her research about everyday Stalinism, the cult of Lenin and Russian popular opinion has been broadcast by the BBC, Finnish and Russian radio and TV as well as the History Channel in Canada.

She is the author of “Making of an Idol: On Uses of Lenin,” “The Public Perception of the Cult of Lenin Based on the Archival Materials” and “The Myth of the Besieged Fortress. Soviet Mass Perception in the 1920s-1930s.”

Et enkelt uddrag:

FP: What are the recent developments in terms of the discoveries in declassified Soviet documents, the major archival findings since 1991?

Velikanova: Studies that focused on mass terror showed such magnitude of tragedy that even now we can’t give an exact total numbers of victims. But now they are more realistic than in Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s or Robert Conquest’s books.

681,692 people were executed in 1937-38; 3,778,234 were sentenced for counter-revolutionary activities from 1930 to 1953.

We learned from the archival sources that mass repressions started in the 1920s and Lenin personally SIGNED cruel orders to kill innocent hostages and priests.

The leading Russian archivist and scholar Oleg Khlevniuk summarized recently that up to 50 million people suffered from Stalinist politics and its consequences.

This total estimate embraces another number that became re-examined: the cost of World War II for Russia, 26.6 million people.

Studies in famines brought documented numbers of losses: 1921- 6 million, 1932-33 – 4-5 million in Ukraine and 1 million in Kazakhstan, 1947 – about 2 million.

NKVD Dungeon

Da pladsen slap op for NKVD, satte de to særskilte ‘begravelses-zoner’ op udenfor byen.

Netside: http://www.memo.ru/memory/communarka/

2) T. Colton: Moscow: Governing the Socialist Metropolis (London 1995) s 288-291.

Six million other farmers across the Soviet Union were starved or shot during collectivization. Stalin told Winston Churchill he liquidated 10 million peasants during the 1930s. Add mass executions by the Cheka in Estonia, Lativia and Lithuania, the genocide of three million Muslims, massacres of Cossacks and Volga Germans, and Soviet industrial genocide accounted for at least 40 million victims, not including 20 million war dead.

Stalin’s murder of millions was simply denied or concealed by a left-wing conspiracy of silence that continues to this day. In the strange moral geometry of mass murder, only Nazis are guilty.

Socialist luminaries like Bernard Shaw, Beatrice and Sidney Webb and Premier Edouard Herriot of France, toured Ukraine during 1932-33 and proclaimed reports of famine were false. Shaw announced: “I did not see one under-nourished person in Russia.” New York Times correspondent Walter Duranty, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his Russian reporting, wrote claims of famine were “malignant propaganda.” Seven million people were dying around them, yet these fools saw nothing. The New York Times has never repudiated Duranty’s lies.
