Iraq gas attack victims demand French inquiry

Filed under: Evidens, Frankrig, Historie, Irak, Kurdistan, Totalitære, Våben — Tags: , , — Hodja @ 23:49

PARIS: Twenty victims of Saddam Hussein’s 1988 chemical weapons attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja, requested a judicial investigation of French suppliers on Monday, saying executives knew what they were sending to the Iraqi ruler and bore some responsibility.

An Iraqi official said the case serves as a warning to anyone who may still try to sell chemicals to tyrants, touching on a central concern in Syria’s civil war. The March 1988 attacks in Halabja, Iraq, which killed up to 5,000 people, marked the deadliest chemical weapons attack against civilians.

Saddam ordered the poison gas strikes to crush a Kurdish rebellion in the north, which was seen as aiding Iran in the final months of its war with Iraq.

Vestens blod for Kinas olie

Since the American-led invasion of 2003, Iraq has become one of the world’s top oil producers, and China is now its biggest customer, an American report said.

“China already buys nearly half the oil that Iraq produces, nearly 1.5 million barrels a day, and is angling for an even bigger share, bidding for a stake now owned by Exxon Mobil in one of Iraq’s largest oil fields,” according to a report published by New York Times Newspaper briefed by “Shafaq News”.

“The Chinese are the biggest beneficiary of this post-Saddam oil boom in Iraq,” said Denise Natali, a Middle East expert at the National Defense University in Washington. “They need energy, and they want to get into the market”.

Le Livre Noir de Saddam Hussein

Le Livre Noir de Saddam Hussein (The Black Book of Saddam Hussein) is a robust denunciation of Saddam’s regime that does not fall into the trap of viewing everything in Iraq through a US-centric prism. The writers – Arabs, Americans, Germans, French and Iranian – have produced the most comprehensive work to date on the former Iraqi president’s war crimes, assembling a mass of evidence that makes the anti-intervention arguments redundant.

“The youngest Hakim detained was only 14. His father and two brothers, together with 13 other relatives, were executed within the first weeks of detention. He and the rest were held in Abu Ghraib, 22 in a cell that measured 4mx6m. There was no running water and a hole in the corner served as a toilet. Recounting his detention in the book, Abdoul al-Hakim says: “The worst moments? It was all terrible, but the worst was the fear of being executed. Each time we heard the lock turn we were silent; it could be the moment to leave, for me, for another. I am angry with those who mix the crimes of the Americans with those of Saddam when they are not comparable.”

Iraq – Amna Suraka Museum (Red Security)

Sulaymaniyah has what is perhaps the best testament to the pain and torture Saddam inflicted on the Iraqi–and especially Kurdish–people during his reign of terror. The Amna Suraka Museum, better known as Red Security due to the color of its walls, was a torture chamber for thousands of prisoners between 1979 and 1991, when it was overrun by the Kurdish Peshmerga.

A tunnel of mirrors that has over 182,000 shards of glass on the walls and over 5,400 light bulbs overhead. Each shard of glass represents a Kurd killed under Saddam and each light bulb represents a Kurdish village destroyed under his reign.

Congressman West Meets with Kurdistan Government

Congressman Allen West (R-FL) released this statement today after meeting with leaders of the Kurdistan Regional Government Delegation; including Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff to President Masoud Barzani, Falah Bakir, head of the KRG Dept. of Foreign Relations, Ashti Hawrami, Minister of Natural Resources and Qubad Talabani, the KRG Representative to the U.S:

“As a 22-year United States Army Veteran who served in Iraq and worked alongside the Kurdish people, I can tell you by experience that the Kurdish people and the Kurdistan government are now and have always been a strong ally to the United States. Their region in the Northern part of Iraq has been continually under attack, and now as United States troops are set to withdraw from Iraq, the Kurds are concerned for their physical and economic security, and rightfully so, as regional powers are poised to play a central role in the Iraqi government.

According to Mr. Hussein, the Obama Administration has told the Kurds they are ‘special friends.’ It is time for the Administration to define what that relationship means and what if anything the United States is willing to do to help secure a safe and prosperous Kurdistan.

Some of the Kurdistan government concerns, include: What is America’s strategic, long-term vision for Iraq? How will the Regional influences affect the Kurdistan region? and What kind of influence can the Kurds have in Iraq when only three percent of the Iraqi military currently is Kurdish?

The solutions to these questions are reachable. First and foremost, Kurdistan must be respected and included as part of the Iraqi constitution. The United States must also work to help develop more economic opportunities in Kurdistan, including greater United States participation in the oil and gas sector. Another important solution includes encouraging Iraq to examine Federalism as part of its government structure, and to create a central government that shares power with different area’s of the country.

The Kurdish people are the largest ethnic group in the world without a country. They are pro-American and have proven to be a strong ally to the United States during the war in Iraq. America owes it to the Kurds to make sure they are treated with respect and included during this transition. As President Obama met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki today, the Kurds also want their voice heard. The Kurdistan government is asking us loud and clear, to not forget about their people during this time of great uncertainty. The consequences of a divided Iraq could be disastrous.”

Ny aktør i dansk fremmedpolitik

Men Al-jazeera vil.
