Turkey invaded Cyprus on July 20, 1974, under the guise of protecting the Turkish minority following an unsuccessful coup against the government of Cyprus by forces loyal to the military junta that governed Greece at the time.

Without an army, navy or air force, the Cypriot people had to rely on a few thousand lightly-armed national guardsmen to defend the island against a full-scale invasion, led by American tanks, helicopter gunships and jet fighters.

In a matter of days, the 40,000-strong Turkish invasion force drove nearly 200,000 Greek Cypriots from their homes, farms and businesses, turning them into refugees in their own country.

Greece attempted to intervene on behalf of Cyprus, but then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger ordered the U.S. 7th Fleet to blockade the Greek navy with orders to sink the Greek ships if they did not return to their home ports.

More than 6,000 Greek-Cypriots were killed by the Turkish troops and another 1,600 (including five American citizens) disappeared behind Turkish lines. Thirty-six years later, there has never been a full accounting by Turkey of what happened to the 1,300 men, 116 women and 133 children caught behind the advancing Turkish army.

Mass graves have been uncovered on parts of the island where civilians were executed by the Turks. Eyewitnesses have testified before investigative commissions of the systematic rape, torture and execution of Cypriot civilians, including children, the edlerly and the disabled.

Since the invasion, more than 115,000 “undesirables” from the mainland have been illegally settled in occupied Cyprus. Turkey opened the doors of prisons and mental institutions and dumped the occupants to Cyprus.

In 1983, Turkey declared the occupied portion of Cyprus as an independent nation. To this day, the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” is recognized by only one country — Turkey.

The Turkish invasion and continuing violation of human rights in Cyprus has been condemned by every major international body, including the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Commonwealth of Nations, the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe. Turkey’s entry into the European Union has been rejected because it continues to occupy a current EU member — Cyprus.

Fed by billions of dollars in U.S. military and economic aid, Turkey thumbs its nose at international law and U.S. taxpayers. This is the same Turkey that continues to have one of the worst records of human rights violations in the world.

Turkey maintains 35,000 occupation troops (armed and equipped by U.S. tax dollars) on Cyprus to prevent the Greek-Cypriots from returning to their homes. It has ignored dozens of U.N. resolutions condemning the invastion and calling for withdrawal of all Turkish troops as a prelude for unification of the island.

As long as U.S. dollars flow into Turkish coffers, there is no incentive for Turkey to leave Cyprus.

Eject!

Paul Belien i The Brussels Journal: “The Euro currency is economically flawed because it is politically flawed, and it politically flawed because, as the Dutch professor Jaap Koelewijn pointed out, it is culturally flawed. The euro is doomed to fall because of insuperable cultural differences.

Ten years ago, the common currency was introduced for political reasons. The aim was to foster the political unification of the EU member states by removing economic barriers, such as different currencies, that existed between these states. This plan might have worked if the European states, especially those from the (predominantly Protestant) north and the (predominantly Catholic) south (plus orthodox Greece) had shared the same culture.

In the southern countries, governments are characterized by a higher degree of corruption, which is generally accepted and, up to a point, even considered benevolent and beneficial, because it is compensated by the government’s inefficiency and sloppiness in collecting taxes. The southern citizens do not expect much from the state, but the state does not expect much from them either. Southerners do not trust the government, but the political system works and is not even perceived to be oppressive because the state in return adopts a laissez faire attitude: it does not worry about being cheated by the citizens. Outwitting the taxman is generally accepted behavior and may even make a man so popular that he can rise to the political top. This is what happened with Silvio Berlusconi in Italy.

Before the euro was introduced, the states in Southern Europe made up for their losses in taxes by occasionally devaluating the currency as a method of indirect tax collection. The introduction of the euro, however, has made the latter impossible, and has put pressure on the governments in the south to improve their efficiency in collecting taxes. As the latter would make these governments hugely unpopular – by breaking the existing modus vivendi, a workable system which so far had not been perceived to be politically oppressive, they would in fact become oppressive – they preferred to accumulate huge budget deficits. When the euro was introduced, the EU authorities imposed upon the eurozone countries the obligation to keep their budget deficit below 3% of GDP and their government debt below 60% of GDP. To hide their real performance from the EU authorities, the southern governments cheated and fixed the figures in the same way that their own citizens had always been allowed to cheat.

The EU is now forcing the Greek government to clamp down on its citizens in a fashion which is incompatible with the political culture in Greece. If Greece fails to do so, the Germans will be forced to bail them out. The latter, however, is perceived by German taxpayers, who rebel against being forced to pay for the “cheating Greeks,” as unacceptable political oppression by the EU.

The northerners with their predominantly Protestant ethic expect a “high trust government” in return for not cheating on the government. The EU, however, has imposed on the northerners authorities who have cheated; the EU now expects these northerners to bail those cheaters out. The southerners, on the other hand, expect little from the government but are not expected to do much in return. The EU is now confronting the southerners with authorities which are about to put the fiscal screws on them. It is not clear yet at which end the system will snap – either the Germans (and the Dutch and the Finns) leave the eurozone, or the Greeks (and the other PIGS – Portugal, Italy, Greece & Spain) are forced out – but that the system will have to give at some end seems certain. When culture clashes with monetary politics, culture is bound to prevail.”

OPDATERING: In a bizarre twist to the Greek debt crisis, France and Germany are pressing Greece to buy their gunboats and warplanes, even as they urge it to cut public spending and curb its deficit.

Tyskere til grækere:

Filed under: EU, Europa, Hodja, Penge, Politik, Tyskland — Tags: , — Hodja @ 10:30

Cypern: Ballade om bar i moske-have

Turkish Republic or Northern Cyprus’s (KKTC) Directorate of Religious Affairs has applied to state offices in Greek Cyprus to stop the construction of a bar in the garden of the Hala Mosque, which houses the tomb of Ümmü Haram, the aunt of the Prophet Muhammad, in South Cyprus, which has resulted in criticism from Muslims living on the island.

Greece’s interior minister said the government will impose longer prison sentences for human traffickers to tackle a growing problem of illegal immigrants.

[…]

Pavlopoulos said he will urge European Union officials in Brussels next week to sign repatriation agreements with the countries of migrants’ origin. He pointed out Greece will press Turkey to respect a bilateral agreement on the return of immigrants to their own countries.

In a related move, Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis asked the Czech rotating presidency of the European Union for support in tackling illegal immigrants arriving in Greece, Italy and Spain.

Dhimmi manual for græsk politi

Proper Behavior Manual” distributed the Greek Internal Affairs Ministry about the attitude towards Muslims.

The publication consists of instructions for policemen and how they should behave in order to finish their jobs without provoking anger among the Mohamed followers. About ten days ago a Greek policeman, tore a piece of paper, which had quotes from the Koran by accident and provoked a strong angry wave among the Muslim immigrants in Athens.

The manual advises on how to arrest Muslims in police stations, in what way authorities should enter the mosques, how the Muslim fasting should be respected, the immigrants right to pray 5 or 6 times per day, not to take off the veils from the women’s faces. The policemen are advised to take off their shoes before entering a mosque for check-up, they need to be careful when searching a Muslim house and to abstain from tearing Arab papers, which might turn out to be quotes from the Koran, they also need to be very careful with any amulets they encounter.

The authorities have been warned that even the slightest mistake can lead to serious religious riots.

ATHENS, Greece

Muslim associations in Athens have filed a lawsuit against a policeman who allegedly desecrated a copy of the Koran last week, media reported on Monday (May 25th).

Last Thursday, the policeman allegedly took a Koran from a customer during a police check at an Athens coffee shop, ripped it apart, threw it on the floor and stomped on it. Police say the officer did not know it was Islam’s holy book.

The Pakistani community in Greece called on the government to assume responsibility for the incident and demanded an apology from authorities.

The incident prompted two days of protests by hundreds of Muslims in central Athens. Violent clashes with police on Friday injured at least 14 people and damage several businesses; 46 people were arrested.
