Estlænderne forbereder sig på guerillakrig mod Rusland

Encouraging citizens to stash warm clothes, canned goods, boots and a rifle may seem a cartoonish defense strategy against a military colossus like Russia.

Yet the Estonians say they need look no further than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to see the effectiveness today, as ever, of an insurgency to even the odds against a powerful army.

Estonia is hardly alone in striking upon the idea of dispersing guns among the populace to advertise the potential for widespread resistance, as a deterrent.

Of the top four nations in the world for private gun ownership — the United States, Yemen, Switzerland and Finland — the No. 3 and 4 spots belong to small nations with a minutemen-style civilian call-up as a defense strategy or with a history of partisan war.

“The best deterrent is not only armed soldiers, but armed citizens, too,” Brig. Gen. Meelis Kiili, the commander of the Estonian Defense League, said in an interview in Tallinn, the capital.

tavshedMarianne Mikko, an Estonian centre-left MEP, is concerned that growing numbers of blogs are being used by individuals with “malicious intentions or hidden agendas”. “The blogosphere has so far been a haven of good intentions and relatively honest dealing. However, with blogs becoming commonplace, less principled people will want to use them,” she said. Mrs Mikko has proposed that bloggers should be required to identify themselves and that some popular blogs should come with a declaration of interests. “We do not need to know the exact identity of bloggers. We need some credentials, a quality mark, a certain disclosure of who is writing and why. We need this to be able to trust and rely on the source,” she said. Chris Heaton Harris, a British Conservative Euro MP, has rejected any moves to “regulate and restrict independent media sources”. “Mrs Mikko obviously does not understand that blogs have become the life blood of a vibrant democracy,” he said. “I hope these proposals are kicked out.”- Thursday’s vote in the European Parliament is not legally binding but is an indicator of growing EU concern over the influence of blogs on the internet. A recent internal European Commission report, leaked three weeks ago, found that the EU was losing the battle for hearts and minds online. “Blog activity remains overwhelmingly negative,” it said.

Branding: Hvordan får man Verden til at hade Israel

Mr. Cravatts, PhD, director of Boston University’s Program in Book and Magazine Publishing at the Center for Professional Education, writes frequently on terrorism, higher education, politics, culture, law, marketing, and housing, and is currently writing a book about the world-wide assault on Israel taking place on college campuses.

As part of evaluating the competitive landscape of the popularity of nations, in a process referred to in marketing circles as ‘place branding,’ Israel, to no one’s great surprise, comes up short in brand likeability, ranking last out of 35 nations included in an August 2006 survey conducted by nation branding expert Simon Anholt, even less attractive to respondents than Indonesia, Estonia, and Turkey.

How could this have happened to a country that is the Middle East’s only thriving democracy and enjoys a remarkably robust economy that has spawned some 1000 startup high tech companies, for example, second only to the U.S.? How, in short, would you go about making the world hate Israel?

This is how you would accomplish that objective if you were an enemy of Israel:

The Soviet Story – aldrig vist på DDR2

A documentary film by a Latvian director that claims “the Soviet Union helped Nazi Germany instigate the Holocaust” will see its premiere April 9 at the European Parliament in Belgium.

The documentary, The Soviet Story, is directed by Edvīns Šnore, who spent 10 years gathering information and two years filming in several countries, according to the film’s Web site, sovietstory.com.

The English-language documentary runs 85 minutes. It is produced by Rīga-based SIA Labvakar.

Among those interviewed in the film are Western and Russian historians, as well as survivors of the Soviet Gulag.

The chief sponsor of the production is the conservative alliance Union for Europe of the Nations, whose members include four members of the European Parliament from Latvia, all members of For Fatherland and Freedom (Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK). Also supporting the film are the Rīga City Council and the magazine Tēvijas Sargs.

The premiere is scheduled at 18:00 hours April 9 in Room 5B001 in the PHS Building of the European Parliament in Brussels.

Six million other farmers across the Soviet Union were starved or shot during collectivization. Stalin told Winston Churchill he liquidated 10 million peasants during the 1930s. Add mass executions by the Cheka in Estonia, Lativia and Lithuania, the genocide of three million Muslims, massacres of Cossacks and Volga Germans, and Soviet industrial genocide accounted for at least 40 million victims, not including 20 million war dead.

Stalin’s murder of millions was simply denied or concealed by a left-wing conspiracy of silence that continues to this day. In the strange moral geometry of mass murder, only Nazis are guilty.

Socialist luminaries like Bernard Shaw, Beatrice and Sidney Webb and Premier Edouard Herriot of France, toured Ukraine during 1932-33 and proclaimed reports of famine were false. Shaw announced: “I did not see one under-nourished person in Russia.” New York Times correspondent Walter Duranty, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his Russian reporting, wrote claims of famine were “malignant propaganda.” Seven million people were dying around them, yet these fools saw nothing. The New York Times has never repudiated Duranty’s lies.

Alvorlig social sygdom udbredt i EU

“Racist violence and crime remains a serious social ill across the EU,” the EU’s Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) said in a report presented to the European Parliament.

“Although good practices in response to the problem either continued or emerged in some member states in 2006 … most member states still have insufficient data collection on racist violence and crime,” the agency, which came into being this March, added.

The annual Report on Racism and Xenophobia, based on data drawn up by the FRA’s forerunner, the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia, paints a bleak picture of the state of anti- discrimination campaigns across the 27-member union.

The EU’s keystone piece of legislation in the field of racial discrimination is the Racial Equality Directive, adopted by the European Commission in June 2000 as a “framework for combating discrimination on the grounds of racial or ethnic origin.”

Despite the fact that the Directive’s provisions had been widely, if not universally, adopted by EU member states as of the end of 2006, serious questions remain about its implementation.

“In many countries there is no indication that a single sanction had been applied, or compensation awarded, in cases of ethnic discrimination during 2006,” the FRA report said.

Those countries were the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain, it continued.

The problem is compounded by a lack of consensus on the definition and reporting of racist crime, with five member states not reporting any data on the issue, and only two – Britain and Finland – being classified as having “comprehensive” data.

According to the Zentral-Institut Islam-Archiv-Deutschland, in Germany, there are 53.7 million Muslims in Europe today. Of these 53.7 million Muslims, 15.9 million live in countries of the European Union. This data comes from the German embassies in Europe.

According to the institute, 7.9% of the 680 million Europeans are Muslims; 3.2% of the inhabitants of the European Union are Muslims.

It is impossible to compare these figures with those from preceding years, because it is the first time that the smaller European countries have participated in the study.

Most of the Muslims live in Russia (25 million) and in the European region of Turkey (5.9 million).

Within the European Union most Muslims live in France (5.5 million), in Germany (3.3 million), in Great Britain (1.5 million), in Bulgaria (1.1 million) and in Italy and the Netherlands (about 1 million each).

The countries with a Muslim majority are Turkey, but also Albania (2.1 million) and Bosnia (2 million).

The countries with the fewest Muslims are Andorra (400), Latvia (380) and Iceland (321).

Of the 494.7 million inhabitants of the European Union, 224.5 million are Catholic, 115 million are atheist, 57.8 million are Protestant, 39 million are Orthodox, 15.9 million are Muslims and 1.5 million are Jews.
