Legalbrief: “Egyptian blogger Abdel Nabil has been released following four years of imprisonment on charges of insulting Islam and causing sectarian strife on his blog. The Jurist notes that Nabil, a former law student, was convicted in 2007 for posting statements critical of Islamic authorities and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, calling him a dictator. Nabil also allegedly described his university, Al-Azhar University, as an institution of ‘terrorism’. Charges against him included inciting sedition, insulting Islam, harming national unity and insulting the President. According to the report, Nabil’s four-year sentence had ended on 5 November, but he was held by authorities for 10 more days. Full Jurist report

Syria and Hizballah now possess thousands of surface missiles from Iran with enhanced ranges of up to 300 kilometers and they are being outfitted by Iranian engineers with guidance systems.

The new guided Fateh-110, M-600 and Scud D missiles hardware can pinpoint any part of Israel within a 10-meter radius in defiance of Israel’s aerial and anti-missile capabilities, say Israeli and Western missile experts. Hizballah and Syria have been furnished by Iran with the means for fighting a new, far more comprehensive war.

Palestinian terrorists operating out of the Gaza Strip fired seven mortar shells into southern Israel on Friday.

Of particular note was that four of those shells were packed with white phosphorous.

[….]

Israel is angered by the lack of a UN response to the use of phosphorous shells by the Palestinians, after the UN-sanctioned Goldstone Committee made such a big deal of criticizing Israel’s use of white phosphorous during the 2008-2009 Gaza war. The committee’s accusations fueled widespread claims of alleged Israeli war crimes.

The truth is that white phosphorous shells, when used to create a smoke screen for troops or to mark enemy positions, are not prohibited under international law. But when used as an incendiary weapon, especially against civilian targets, white phosphorous shells are indeed prohibited.
