I visse kredse er det et “must” at have en mobil – uanset hvad.

(England): Man found guilty of kidnapping a woman in broad daylight and raping her.

Ahadullah Khughiani (and 4 of his mates) decided last Nov to drive past a woman in the middle of Bristol during the afternoon and shout out “£10 for the lot of us” when the woman ignored them. They stopped the car dragged her in, took her to a local park and raped her. After the victim reported the rape to the police, DNA evidence linked Ahadullah to the rape.

When the Old Bill went a knocking, they found he was unable to explain why he had her mobile phone and coat at his home. This inability to explain why was somewhat unfortunate for the Afghan asylum seeker yesterday when a court found him guilty of kidnapping, theft and rape.

ClimateGate I: Attempted Political Suppression of Science

This is a personal account linking efforts to suppress scientific publication about climate science and policy by then-Senator (later vice president) Al Gore and his staff.1 In those efforts, an individual working closely with Senator Gore and his staff made false and damaging statements about my behavior as a scientist.
I filed a libel suit against the individual. The suit was settled when he issued a retraction and apology tomethat included a statement that members of Senator Gore’s staff had made “similar statements and insinuations” to those that he retracted.

Vice President Al Gore also tried to influence at least one TV news anchor to carry out an investigation designed to discredit those who disagreed with his personal views about climate change. His effort failed because of the newsman’s integrity. Our country’s laws provide protection from libelous statements, and I was able to defend myself through the legal process.

The free press and a newsman’s integrity saved a number of scientists, including me, from a public attack intended to discredit them. In my case, “the system worked,” but it cost my legal representatives and me money and time to defend against attacks launched from one of the most powerful politicians of the time.

(Manchester) A NUN had her car stolen in a robbery in Levenshulme, Manchester.

At about 4.30pm on Wednesday 2 December 2009, the victim – who is a member of Daughters of Charity – was in her Ford Ka, on Rushford Avenue, when she was approached by two men. The pair were aggressive and demanded she get out of the car.

They then escaped in the car, leaving the victim, aged 62, stranded and distraught.

The offenders are described as being Asian or of mixed race and in their late teens or early 20s. The car was involved in a collision on Dickinson Road at its junction with Whiley Street shortly before 5.15pm the following day, Thursday 3 December 2009. Three men, described as Asian and about 17-years-old, were seen to run from the car.

Dear fellow member of the American Physical Society:

This is a matter of great importance to the integrity of the Society. It is being sent to a random fraction of the membership, so we hope you will pass it on.

By now everyone has heard of what has come to be known as ClimateGate, which was and is an international scientific fraud, the worst any of us have seen in our cumulative 223 years of APS membership. For those who have missed the news we recommend the excellent summary article by Richard Lindzen in the November 30 edition of the Wall Street journal, entitled “The Climate Science
isn’t Settled,” for a balanced account of the situation. It was written by a scientist of unquestioned authority and integrity. A copy can be found among the items at http://tinyurl.com/lg266u, and a visit to http://www.ClimateDepot.com can fill in the details of the scandal, while adding spice.

What has this to do with APS? In 2007 the APS Council adopted a Statement on global warming (also reproduced at the tinyurl site mentioned above) that was based largely on the scientific work that is now revealed to have been corrupted. (The principals in this escapade have not denied what they did, but have sought to dismiss it by saying that it is normal practice among scientists. You know and we know that that is simply untrue. Physicists are not expected to cheat.)

We have asked the APS management to put the 2007 Statement on ice until the extent to which it is tainted can be determined, but that has not been done. We have also asked that the membership be consulted on this point, but that too has not been done.

None of us would use corrupted science in our own work, nor would we sign off on a thesis by a student who did so. This is not only a matter of science, it is a matter of integrity, and the integrity of the APS is now at stake. That is why we are taking the unusual step of communicating directly with at least a fraction of the membership.

If you believe that the APS should withdraw a Policy Statement that is based on admittedly corrupted science, and should then undertake to clarify the real state of the art in the best tradition of a learned society, please send a note to the incoming President of the APS ccallan@princeton.edu, with the single word YES in the subject line. That will make it easier for him to count.

This is the kind of story (from the Israeli paper Ha’aretz) that most Western journalists prefer not to cover.

After all, it might spoil the negative image of Israel and undermine the myth of the totally “impoverished” West Bank that they carefully spin for their readers.

Religiøs forfølgelse under islam

The West’s relations with the Islamic world remain troubled.

The latest challenge was the Swiss vote to ban the construction of minarets on mosques.

However, Islamic governments are in no position to complain. They tend to not only violate human rights, but also persecute Christians, Jews and other religious minorities.

Many authoritarian states violate religious liberty along with other freedoms. But Muslim nations are almost unique in their willingness to persecute religious minorities to promote religious ends, as is evident from the State Department’s latest report on religious liberty abroad.

Even the most moderate Islamic states often fall far short of respecting religious minorities. For instance, Morocco detained converts from Islam to Christianity, expelled Christian missionaries, and restricted “non-Islamic materials and proselytizing.” Many other Islamic states are far worse.

First, it raises delicate issues of reciprocity in Muslim-Christian relations.

A few examples:

When Our Lady of the Rosary, Qatar’s first-ever church, opened last year, it did so minus cross, bell, dome, steeple, or signboard. Rosary’s priest, Father Tom Veneracion, explained their absence: “The idea is to be discreet because we don’t want to inflame any sensitivities.”

And when the Christians of a town in upper Egypt, Nazlet al-Badraman, finally after four years of “laborious negotiation, pleading and grappling with the authorities”, won permission in October to restore a tottering tower at the Mar-Girgis Church, a mob of about 200 Muslims attacked them, throwing stones and shouting Islamic and sectarian slogans. The situation for Copts is so bad, they have reverted to building secret churches.

Why, the Catholic Church and others are asking, should Christians suffer such indignities while Muslims enjoy full rights in historically Christian countries? The Swiss vote fits into this new spirit. Second, Europe stands at a crossroads with respect to its Muslim population. Of the three main future prospects — everyone getting along, Muslims dominating, or Muslims rejected — the first is highly improbable but the second and third seem equally possible. In this context, the Swiss vote represents a potentially important legitimisation of anti-Islamic views.

Although not scientific, the lop-sidedness of these (and other) polls, ranging from 73 to 93 per cent majorities endorsing the Swiss referendum, signal that Swiss voters represent growing anti-Islamic sentiments throughout Europe. The new amendment also validates and potentially encourages resistance to Islamisation throughout the continent.

For these reasons, the Swiss vote represents a possible turning point for European Islam.

Rapport: De muslimske lande dumper på menneskerettigheder

Human rights deteriorated across the Arab world in 2009 with torture widely practised in several countries, namely Egypt, an Arab watchdog said in a report released on Tuesday.

The report by the independent Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies surveyed 12 countries and said that most of them repressed human rights activists, press freedoms and discriminated against religious minorities.

The state of human rights in the 12 countries — Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen — “has worsened compared to 2008,” the report said.

Bahey eldin Hassan, the rights group’s director, said the 12 countries surveyed were indicative of the region.

“We think that through analysing these countries we can get a general picture of the region,” he said.

Hassan said the report did not include recommendations because the governments would ignore them.

“These are not governments that are going through a reform process and are waiting for advice.”

‘Allan’ fremhævede forleden følgende lande som særligt tolerante:

Ægypten (Der i ovenstående artikel fremhæves som et af de værste lande)
Forenede Arabiske Emirater

Allan: “Det er nogle hyggelige venner I holder jer her.”

The Brussels Journal:

If Switzerland were part of the European Union (EU), the Swiss would no doubt be made to vote again until they give the answer their government wants. That is what some self-declared “democrats” are, indeed, proposing.

– “The Swiss will have to vote again,” Daniel Cohn-Bendit, the leader of the Green group in the EU Parliament told the Swiss newspaper Le Temps.

– “But the Swiss people have spoken…,” Le Temps objected.

– “So what?” Mr. Cohn-Bendit said.

Switzerland, however, is one of the few nations in Europe that is not a member of the EU. In fact, the Swiss have already rejected EU membership in five referendums. They are so attached to their sovereignty, which is predominantly local (municipal and cantonal), that they are loathe to transfer it to the federal authorities in Bern, let alone to supranational organizations even further removed from their Alpine villages….
