Svenska Dagbladet 5/6 2002 (valgår):
Common front against Sweden Democrats.
Lars Stjernkvist (social democrat) thinks it is important not to present Sweden Democrats as being a bigger party than it is. There is no reason to discuss anything with “0.25% parties”, he says. “It was a good thing that we met to exchange views. It is important to possess the facts in order to rebut their false claims and generalisations”.
He says that that social democrats could meet Sweden Demortats in debate locally, but not in a national forum. “But if ever I pass Sweden Democrats ranting away, I´ll stop and challenge their opinions”. Pernille Zethraeus from the left.wing Vänstre party says there are never grounds for debating anything with xenophobic parties. “Our policy forbids us to do that, although there can be exceptions on a local level”.
The People´s Party (Folkpartiet) has already debated with the Sweden Democrats.
“I think the best way to encounter them is by direct confrontation, and not by speaking in the same place the next day”, says party secretary Johan Pehrson. He says debate is important, but adds that it is possible there won´t be any more debates. “We should focus on the social democrats, Vänstre and the Moderates. There is no reason to court the Sweden Democrats.
Sven Gunnar Perrson (Christan Democrats) sees no reason for a debate. “But it is important that we show how we can improve integration”.
Mikael Jansson, spokesman for Sweden Democrats is surprised that the Seven established parties have met in order to combat his party. ”The fact that they work together to stop us is not democratic. They won´t meet us face to face and that´s unfortunate. There ought to be a more even debate”, says Jansson.
He would prefer to debate with the prime minister Göran Persson, but he adds that Socialdemocrats and Moderates are the most difficult because they have the best “emergency plans”.
“It´s easist to win against the People´s Party”.
